In-n-n-n the Mighty Midlands, born & raised, on the green grass is where I spent most of my days, chillin’ out, chewin, not sharing a bite. Being yellow by day, and being creative by night.

Need some advice and recommendations

frank-chimero's set upHi all!
I recently read a post by Frank Chimero who talked about no longer needing a spaceship of a iMac to do his job, but a 13″ Macbook Air and a couple of handy tools. I’ve read this post a good 3 or 4 times now and really think it is a good idea and something I would like to start doing. I carry around my giant iMac in it’s shipping box daily, I take it to work and back again, setting it up and taking it down 4 times, every day. This is doing wonders on my health and strength but I thought, there has to be a better way to do this?

Au revoir 2010 – bonjour 2011!

Well, the end of 2010 has hit me. You may be thinking “dude, end of Jan for a 2010 sum up post – are you insane in the membrane” – no, no I’m not, for me 2010 ended today, yes just today. All 2010 projects are now complete and I’m onto my 2011 work so for me 2011 starts TODAY and excited is not the word.

In this post I just want to sum up a few things about 2010, what I did and where I went, what I learnt and what not and also why I am so excited about 2011! Read the rest of this entry »

Tools don’t make you a designer – talent does

Hi all,

Been a little while hasn’t it – again! I just wanted to make this quick post, as it was something that happened recently that I thought I would share to get other opinions on it, maybe it’s just me, I dunno…

The other day I was looking for a designer to take on a small project I had, I never usually outsource work that I can do with ease, but as it was coming up to the Christmas period, my client needed the work done in a time frame I couldn’t do, he didn’t have time to go scouting for designers he needed his design asap. So, I thought I would ask permission to take on a designer to do this for him, he gets his work and a freelancer out there gets a cheeky bonus before the Christmas hols. Giving you guys something back…awesome give away!!

Well here it is, blog post numo 2 out of, I dunno, lots n lots, my drafts folder is bulging!!

But, this one isn’t about what I’m up to, or what I’ve done or what pretty things I’m bringing to life from my over imaginative mind. This post is for all of you, yep, you, the ones that follow me on Twitter, or on Facebook, or have my RSS feed saved, or have me as a bookmark. Pretty much anyone and everyone that has emailed / followed / tweeted / messaged me…. Read the rest of this entry »

holeycoww where have you been?!

A’hoy hoy!

Wow, it’s been a while ay! I have been meaning to write a ‘i’m still alive‘ blog post for SOOOOOOO long now, but the more I try to find the time to write it, the more stuff comes up!!

The past few months have been manic for me, lots and lots have been happening and I’m damn sure I’ll forget most of them but here goes: Read the rest of this entry »

Don’t forget your followers

As I am new to this whole ‘blogging’ thing, I have been doing a lot of research and reading up on how to come up with creative blog posts. I read one the other day that was posted up on InkRebels, which suggested I write a rant. I started thinking about what happens during my every day life that I could rant about, and nothing sprung to mind instantly, then this morning, something came up. This isn’t a rant per se, but more a little message to put out there, based off my own opinions, that I want to get off my chest. Read the rest of this entry »

holey jebus – thank you!!

Thank you all!!Well, a few days after the launch and the dust is starting to settle, but wow what a ride it has been. Going from idea, to design, to code, to launch has been an incredible journey.

I was super super nervous on the day of the launch, I had promised the world it would be done for 3pm and the site will be live, low and behold, it starts playing up, things start to break, and at one point I even lost my whole blog! Read the rest of this entry »

Welcome to holeycoww.co.uk

Wow, what a ride! I’m so so pleased that I have FINALLY got my personal website up and running and everything *seems* to be working A’ok. holeycoww has been a long time in the making, I must have gone through at least 5 or 6 different designs, some of which got close to being all finished, and then I changed my mind at the end. This one stuck, and I’m really pleased with it. Read the rest of this entry »

Interview with Gavin Strange from JamFactory

Gavin Strange from JamFactoryI’ve been sitting in front of this screen now for a good 20 minutes thinking about how to open up this post. I’ve drank a mug of tea, ate 2 hobnobs and made a tweet in the time it has took for me to think on how to do it. And I’m still pulling blanks. How do you open a post about someone who is truly a blessing to all things design, or about someone that is a MASSIVE influence on how you work, create, look at life and how you gain inspiration. And even now, 25 minutes in, I still can’t think of a ‘comical’ or super duper creative way on introducing this chap. He is a big influence on a lot of designers, he is all over the interwebs showing off his creativeness in every nook and cranny of the big web cogs. Since the day I was introduced to him, I have followed everything he has done, my work drastically changed for the better, my inspiration and motivation got a giant boost. A super creative chappy that not only bring a lot of color to the illustrators world, but a lot of excellent advice and friendly support.

He is known by many as Gavin Strange and many more by JamFactory. A illustrating wizard that creates for the incredible Aardman Animations by daylight and by nightlight he is working away under the alias ‘JamFactory’. I’m honored to have be able to interview him for holeycoww.co.uk, so please, grab a brew, sit back, and relax while we talk to the Leicester born, Bristol based, design legend that is Gavlar Strange: Read the rest of this entry »
